Day 51 - Lewistown, IL to Huntington, IN

Day 51 - Today's plan is to drive 311 miles in 6.5 hours. (Click on any photo to enlarge)

We started our day at Country Side Family Diner which was right across the street from the Big Horse Inn & Suites. It was a nice country style diner with the normal breakfast choices.

After, we headed towards Funks Grove Nature Preserve. Along the way we found Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge on the Illinois River. This was an unplanned stop so we only spent 40 minutes here.

This was a special place and a separate page will be created. To see more go to https://travelingvtjs.blogspot.com/p/emiquon-national-wildlife-refuge.html

The next stop turned into a joke. I was searching for an nature preserve on Rte 66 when we drove past Funks Grove Maple Sirup. I have a way of sniffing out maple, so the joke was that this was my original destination. It wasn't, but we did turn around at the nature preserve and head back. They had never heard of Maple Creemee's so I showed them a few of my Facebook posts.

On this next section we learned to turn off the dirt road filter on Google Maps. We had been on dirt roads before, but this was the first time we were driving on dirt roads to avoid highways. Needless to say we drove a 10 mile stretch of dirt road that paralleled a highway and it took longer than it needed to.

We also took a detour to visit Ludlow, IL. Julie took photos while I drove. It was another small town and then we turned back to our planned route east.

From here it was a 3 hour drive through the country to West Lafayette, IL where Julie and Tripadvisor picked another delicious place to eat Parthenon Greek American Grill.

Another 35 minutes and we were at the Wabash Erie Canal Park in Delphi, Indiana.

We started our vacation exploring the Erie Canal in NY and now we were nearing the end of our vacation on the canal in Indiana. We spent about 40 minutes here. This was a special place that deserves a separate page. To see more photos go to https://travelingvtjs.blogspot.com/p/wabash-and-erie-canal-park.html.

Our final stop of the day was The Purviance House. It can be found on Airbnb, but I think we found it another way, either Tripadvisor or AAA. It was a beautiful place to stay and we enjoyed conversations with the hosts. This was a beautifully restored 1859 home.
